ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Baseball team picked up an impressive road win on Monday, Feb. 24, defeating the Holy Innocents Golden Bears 6-5.
MV jumped out to a 3-run lead in the first inning and scored key runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take the win.
Will Flowers got the Mustangs on the board in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Nate Thomas.
Later in the inning, Rigby Anderson singled to score Hudson Forrest followed by a Harris Meriwether single to bring in Anderson for a 3-0 lead.
MV added a run in the top of the second inning when Hayes Hudson scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0 Mustangs.
The Golden Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead.
After two scoreless frames, MV would tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning on a Carson Albert double to plate Meriwether.
In the top of the seventh, Graham Cawthon came in to score on a Holy Innocents throwing error to give the Mustangs the lead back at 6-5.
The Golden Bears got a base-runner on in the bottom of the seventh with one out but Preston Grice slammed the door to earn the save.
Elliott Shiver picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs, tossing 1.2 innings in relief.
MV (3-1) returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 26 traveling to Saint Francis for a region match-up with the Knights.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
