ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Track & Fiels teams had a strong showing on Day 1 of the Atlanta Metro Championships on Saturday, March 22 at Pace Academy.
One of the main highlights of the day came from the Boys 800M Finals.
After recently earning All-American honors at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York, Junior Haris Flynn gave an epic performance in his outdoor season debut by winning the 800M Boys Championship with a New School record of 1:52.86.
This time also places Haris as the no. 1 800M runner in the state across all classifications and a USA Top 25 time.
Freshman Morgan Huggins had a Top-7 finish with a time of 11:41.52 that vaults her to the no. 1 ranking for the classification (1-3A Private) in the Girls 3200M.
Top 15 Finishers:
- Senior Retta Duckett finished Top-5 in Girls Discus and Top-3 in Girls Shot Put. Freshman Sarah Porter finished right outside of the Top-10 in both events.
-Boys Discus saw sophomore Donald Boose with a Top-10 finish overall and sophomore Dylan Rosenthal with a Top-15 finish in Boys Shot Put.
-Boys Long Jump produced a Top-6 finish by sophomore Kadin Tomlinson with a leap of 18 feet-9 inches. Sophomore Jalen Hagens finished right outside of the Top-10 as well.
Qualifiers for Day 2 Finals are:
-Senior Kennedy Reynolds had the fastest qualifying time in both Girls 100M Hurdles and Girls 300M Hurdles.
-Senior Alexis Smith blazed to the fastest qualifying time with ease in the Girls 400M Dash with the second fastest qualifying time coming from sophomore Cora Champney.
-Cora Champney also posted the fastest qualifying time in the Girls 200M Dash with a new personal best time of 25.38.
The Atlanta Metro Championships conclude on Monday, March 24 at Pace Academy with events beginning at 4:15 p.m.
