DACULA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys Track & Field teams were in action on Wednesday, April 23, competing in the Area Championships hosted by Hebron Christian Academy.
Several Mustangs posted high finishes in the event to advance to GHSA Sectionals.
Below is recap of the event.
-Junior Retta Duckett was the first to advance in both Girls Discus (Top 8) and Girls Shot Put (Top 4) with a new PR of 29 feet, 8 inches.
-Junior Bella Champney finished in the Top 6 in the Girls Triple Jump to advance to the Sectionals Championships.
-Sophomore Kadin Tomlinson leaped to a new PR with a jump of 19 feet, 3 inches in the Boys Long Jump.
-Freshman Morgan Huggins won the Area Championship in the Girls 3200M Run, coupled with a Top 3 finish in the Girls 1600M Run.
-Senior Kennedy Reynolds, for the third year in a row, delivered another Region/Area Championship performance in the Girls 100M Hurdles, finishing in first place with a new PR and a Georgia Top 50 time of 14.53. Reynolds doubled-up her individual Championship run in the Girls 300M Hurdles as well.
-The Girls 4x100M Relay of freshman Gracie Boswell, senior Kennedy Reynolds, senior Alexis Smith and sophomore Cora Champney won the Area Championships but also set a new school record with a winning time of 50.00.
-In The Girls 400M Run, Alexis Smith and Cora Champney finished Top-2 and Top-3 to advance.
-Freshman Alexis Kendall ran a Top-6 time and a new PR to qualify for her first Sectional Championships. Kendall also followed up her 400M qualification with a new PR and will be moving on to Sectionals in the Girls 800M with a Top 6 finish.
-Senior Gracie Urban broke her own PR, finishing Top 3 in the Girls 800M to advance to Sectionals.
-Sophomore Cora Champney claimed her first Area Championships by running a new PR and a Georgia Top 50 time of 24.91 in the Girls 200M. She is joined by senior Alexis Smith with a Top 4 finish to both advance to Sectionals.
-The Girls 4x400M Relay team of freshman Morgan Huggins, sophomore Cora Champney, and seniors Alexis Smith and Kennedy Reynolds set a new school record time of 3:55.53 and 26 seconds ahead of the next competitors. The team is now ranked no. 2 in the 1A-3A Private classification.
-Boys 4x200M Relay consisting of freshman Hamilton Brown, freshman Wendell Olden III, sophomore Kadin Tomlinson and sophomore Jalen Hagans finished Top 4 to advance to Sectionals.
-Boys 4x100M relay also advanced with a Top 4 finish by Kadin Tomlinson, sophomore Kaden Williamson, freshman Hamilton Brown and senior Ethan Pajot.
-Senior Ethan Pajot followed up his relay qualification by finishing Area Champion Runner-Up with a new PR in the Boys 400M with a time of 50.80
GHSA Sectionals are set for Saturday, May 3 at Greater Atlanta Christian School.
