ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team avenged its playoff loss a year ago to Savannah Country Day, defeating the Hornets 23-13 on Friday, Nov. 14 at Ron Hill Field.
MV now advances to the Sweet-16 where they will play Fellowship Christian School.
The Mustangs struck first on their second play from scrimmage when Keon Cleland found Taurean Rawlins for a 75-yard touchdown. Nic Tur made the extra point to give MV a 7-0 lead 58 seconds into the contest.
Mount Vernon scored again at the 5:21 mark of the second period when Cleland connected with Ethan Siggers for a 30-yard touchdown. The PAT failed but MV led 13-0.
The Mustangs closed out the first half with another Cleland to Rawlins touchdown, this time from 41 yards, and Tur made the extra point for a 20-0 lead at halftime.
The Hornets got on the board in the second half with 1:58 to play in the third quarter on a Thomas Holland two-yard touchdown run. With Cash Ramirez' PAT, MV led 20-7.
MV answered with 9:07 to play in the fourth quarter on a Nico Turr 22-yard field goal that made it 23-7.
Holland would score once more late in the game, the final touchdown of the game. A failed two-point conversion brought the score to 23-13.
The Mustangs racked up 457 yards of total offense - 281 in the air and 175 on the ground.
Cleland finished the game 13-of-17 with three touchdowns and one interception. The junior also rushed for 103 yards.
Rawlins hauled in seven catches for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
Harrison Mills finished with 71 rushing yards on 17 carries as well.
MV (6-5) returns to play on Friday, Nov. 21 traveling to Fellowship Christian School for the GHSA Private Sweet 16.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bob Lord Field in Roswell, Ga.
