ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team had a memorable weekend, defeating two Top-5 opponents at the Upper Campus Gym.
MV outlasted no. 2 Walker 63-60 in overtime on Friday, Jan. 9 before defeating no. 4 Darlington 70-57 on Saturday, Jan. 10.
In Friday's contest against Walker, MV led 14-12 after the first quarter.
Walker outscored MV 12-6 in the second period to take a 24-20 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs came out on fire defensively in the third quarter, limiting Walker to just 10 points while scoring 19 on the offensive end.
A 20-15 run by the Wolverines in the fourth, including a made last-second desperation 3-pointer, would send the game to overtime.
In OT, Walker went ahead 60-56 with just under two minutes to play.
But the Mustangs got a clutch 3-pointer from JJ Paige and free throws from Darrell Dickens, III to take a one-point lead with less than 30 seconds to play.
MV's defense would force a turnover and Chase Daniels made a lay-up with time expiring to seal the Mustang win.
Dickens, III finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and one block.
Paige totaled 14 points and six boards. The junior was 4-of-7 from behind the arc as well.
Quint McGrath was in double figures with 11 points that included 3-of-7 from 3-point range.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, MV bested Darlington 70-57 at home.
Dickens, III finished with 23 points, six rebounds and three blocks to lead the Mustangs.
Noah Brady tallied a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Paige finished with 13 points.
Mount Vernon (14-1, 6-0 Reg. 5-1A DI) returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 13, traveling to Mount Paran Christian School.
Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Hughes Gymnasium.
