ALPHARETTA, Ga. - For the third time in program history, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team are regular season region champions.
The Mustangs captured that feat with a come-from-behind 75-68 win over the St. Francis Knights on the road on Tuesday night, Feb. 10.
MV will be the no. 1 seed in the Region 5-1A DI Tournament, which begins on Monday, Feb. 16.
During Tuesday's contest, St. Francis led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter and outscored MV 17-16 in the second period to lead 36-28 at halftime.
Both offenses continued to fire on all cylinders in the third quarter as the Mustangs posted 23 points while the Knights added 22 of their own.
The Mustangs continued their offensive push, winning the fourth quarter 23-10 to take the win.
MV had four players in double-figures scoring: Darrell Dickens, III (17), Chase Daniels (14), Gabe Alterman (10) and Quint McGrath (10).
Mount Vernon capitalized from behind the arc line late in the game, drilling four 3-pointers in the final period to aide in the win.
The Mustangs shot 77 percent from the free throw line, hitting 10 of their 13 opportunities.
Justin Conway and Landon Evans led St. Francis in scoring, each with a game-high 18 points.
Mount Vernon (22-3) is back in action on Monday, Feb. 16 for the Region Tournament Quarterfinals against the winner of the (9) B.E.S.T. Academy/(8) Mount Paran game.
Tip-off for Monday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
