SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team pulled off the unthinkable on Wednesday night, Feb. 18, defeating the Walker School Wolverines 69-64 in overtime at the Aitan Athletic Complex at Weber School.
Down 59-57 with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Gabe Alterman heaved a three-quarter-court in-bounds pass that found classmate Darrell Dickens, III who hit a game-tying jumper to send the game to overtime.
MV would follow the thrilling moment by winning the overtime period 10-4 to advance to the Region Tournament Finals on Friday night, Feb. 20.
A back-and-forth battle all night, MV led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and edged Walker 15-14 in the second period to go ahead 28-25 at halftime.
The Wolverines bit back in the third quarter, winning the period 21-18 to set up a dramatic final frame.
With under a 30 seconds to play and the game tied at 57-57, Walker's King Daniel Hernandez hit a layup attempt with with time expiring to seemingly give the Wolverines the win.
But MV called a timeout as soon as the basket was made, resulting in 1.1 seconds being put back on the clock for one last play for the Mustangs.
Alterman then found Dickens, III for the make to send the game to overtime.
Four players finished in double-figures scoring for the Mustangs: Dickens, III (15), Alterman (14), Noah Brady (12) and Chase Daniels (11).
The Mustangs made nine 3-pointers throughout the contest, including five in the third quarter.
Walker was paced by the 20 points of Devan Fernande, 17 of which came in the second half.
Mount Vernon (24-3) will play Paideia School for the Region Tournament Championship on Friday night, Feb. 20.
MV defeated the Pythons back on Jan. 30 at home 67-64.
Tip-off for the title game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Weber School.
