SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - For the third time in four years, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team are Region Tournament Champions.
The Mustangs accomplished that feat with a 69-63 win over the Paideia School Pythons on Friday night, Feb. 20 at the Eitan Force Athletic Complex at Weber School.
The Mustangs led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Pythons 21-10 in the second period to go ahead 32-20 at halftime.
MV added 21 more points in the third frame while holding Paideia to 18 points for a 53-38 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Mount Vernon withstood a 25-16 run by the Pythons in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
MV's Darrell Dickens, III led all scorers with 28 points that included 10 makes from the free throw line and 8-of-17 from the field.
Dickens, III also led the Mustangs in rebounding with seven boards.
Other Mustangs in double-figures scoring included: Quint McGrath (11) and Noah Brady (10).
Gabe Alterman led the squad in assists and steals, picking up four of each.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field and posted that same mark from behind the 3-point line.
Mount Vernon (25-3) will be the no. 4 seed in the GHSA Private State Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
MV will host Landmark Christian School at 7 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
Admission will be charged due to GHSA state playoff regulations.

The Mustangs defeated Landmark Christian earlier this season 80-46 on Jan. 27.
