ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up a first round state tournament victory on Wednesday night, Feb. 25, defeating the Landmark Christian War Eagles 71-42 at the Upper Campus Gym to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Mustangs led 24-8 at the end of the first quarter and used a 16-9 run in the second period to go into the locker room up 40-17.

MV would outscore Landmark Christian 31-25 in the second half to cruise to the victory.

Darrell Dickens, III led the Mustangs in scoring with 13 points.

Noah Brady and Quint McGrath each posted a dozen points as well.

Tripp Jackson led the team with nine rebounds and three blocks to go with eight points.

Gabe Alterman, Jamal Oliver, and Jackson each netted three assists.

Chase Daniels, Dickens III, and Jackson combined for six steals (two apiece).

The Mustangs out-rebounded the War Eagles 33-27 and dominated the points-in-the-paint battle 42-16.

MV also shot 50 percent from the field as a team, including 40 percent from 3-point range (8-of-20).

Mount Vernon (26-3) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 hosting Savannah Christian in the GHSA Private Sweet 16.

Savannah Christian defeated Whitefield 58-56 in overtime to advance on Wednesday night.

Tip-off for Saturday's contest against the Raiders is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
