ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team picked up a 4-2 region win over the St. Francis Knights at Mustang Park on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 3.

MV jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to two home runs.

Bella Durkee smashed a 2-run home run followed by a Mamie Bowen inside-the-park home run.

The Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Taylor D'Auria singled that allowed Alex Schiff to score.

The Knights picked up a run in the top of the fourth inning and another in the fifth to cut the Mustang lead in half.

A severe weather delay halted the action after the top of the fifth inning resulting in the game being called.

Durkee earned the win in the circle for MV.

The righty tossed five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Mount Vernon (9-4, 2-1 Reg. 9-2A) returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9, traveling to Marist School.

First pitch against the War Eagles is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Kitchin Field.
