Mustangs Roll to 34-0 Victory in Scrimmage vs. Walker

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity football team rolled to a 34-0 victory over the Walker School Wolverines in its final scrimmage leading up to the 2018 regular season.

With 429 yards of offense, including 223 rushing and 206 in the air, the Mustangs showed signs of promise heading into the season opener next week at Prince Avenue.

The Mustangs scored twice in the opening frame, the first on a 35-yard pass from Blake Kytle to Justin Douglas. Will Lavender added the extra point to give the Mustangs the lead for good with 7:55 to play in the first quarter.

With 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Austin Douglas ran in a four-yard touchdown and Lavender's extra point was on the mark again for a 14-0 lead.

The final score of the half for Mount Vernon came with 8:42 to play in the second quarter when Kytle rushed in a seven-yard touchdown. Lavender was good again on his PAT and the Mustangs led 21-0 at intermission.

In the second half, Mount Vernon wasted little time to score again.

With 9:41 remaining in the third quarter, Kytle aired out a 58-yard strike to Justin Douglas for his second touchdown of the contest. Lavender connected again on his extra point and the Mustangs had a commanding 28-0 lead.

The last score from Mount Vernon came from Spencer Corley with 38 seconds to play in the third frame on a two-yard rush.

Kytle finished the game 10-for-14 with 206 yards and two touchdowns.

Austin Douglas paced the Mustangs in rushing with eight carries totaling 63 yards while Justin Douglas hauled in five catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

In total, the Mustangs finished with 20 first downs in the contest.

The Mustang defense was a threat the entire game, stopping the Wolverines on eight consecutive series. Walker never reached past the five-yard line.

Mount Vernon was whistled for 10 penalties totaling 86 yards.

The Mustangs return to action on Friday, August 17, traveling to Bogart, Ga. to take on Prince Avenue to open the 2018 campaign.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Wolverine Field and will be the first time the two squads have met.
