Mustangs Drop Season Opener to Mt. Paran Eagles 3-0

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity volleyball team hit the court for the first time in 2018 on Tuesday night, falling to the Mt. Paran Eagles 3-0 in a best-of-five game series at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

The Eagles took game one 25-17 after a rapid start. Mt. Paran jumped out to a 6-0 lead and forced Mount Vernon to call a timeout while up 12-5.

After a 7-4 run to push the Eagle lead to 19-9, both squads traded a 6-6 spurt to put the Eagles up one game.

The Mustangs totaled nine assists in the first game, led by the six of Mackenzie Morris. Anjali Singh finished with three kills while Zoe Stupek and Katie Peddlie tallied seven and six digs, respectively.

In game two, the Eagles and Mustangs traded blows early, but Mt. Paran pulled away for a 25-16 victory.

Tied at 5-5, the Eagles went on a 15-4 run to seal the victory.

The Mustangs finished with five assists, all coming from Morris. Peddle smashed two kills to go along with her seven digs. Stupek also had seven digs in the game.

Game three also went to the Eagles, closing the match with a 25-20 win.

A back-and-forth affair in the beginning, Mount Vernon took its only lead at 10-9. But Mt. Paran ended the game and match on a 16-10 run.

Peddle had five kills in game three, Morris totaled all of Mount Vernon's 10 assists and Stupek added four digs.

The Mustangs had three aces the entire match. Stupek lead the squad with two while Peddle added one.

Mount Vernon returns to action on Thursday, August 16, traveling to Mt. Bethel Christian Academy for two matches.

The Mustangs take on Kings Academy (at Mt. Bethel) at 6 p.m. followed by Mt. Bethel at 7 p.m. in Marietta, Ga.
