THE GAME: The Mount Vernon football team hits the road for the 2018 season opener at Prince Avenue on Friday, August 17.

Kickoff is slated at 7:30 p.m. at Wolverine Field in Bogart, Ga.

SERIES HISTORY: Friday's meetings against the Wolverines marks the first time in program history the Mustangs will take on Prince Avenue.

LAST TIME OUT for PRINCE AVENUE: The Wolverines closed the 2017 campaign with a 55-0 loss at ELCA in the GHSA Class-A Private Semifinals. The Wolverines claimed a 31-18 victory over Darlington in the Quarterfinals to advance to the Semifinals.

LAST TIME OUT for MOUNT VERNON: The Mustangs hosted its first ever GHSA State Playoff game in 2017, taking down Our Lady of Mercy in the first round 21-14. The Mustangs fell 53-12 in the second round on the road to Mt. Paran.

15th EDITION: The 2018 season marks the 15th year of Mustang football.

The program began in 1984 with one game according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association.

The Mustangs played in the GISA from 2006-2011 before joining the GHSA in 2012.

Over than span, the Mustangs have had four coaches lead the squad: Wayne Dabbs (2015-present), Ryan Zimmerman (2013-14), Reggie Burnette (2008-12), and Stan Whitlock (2006-07).

RANKINGS: The Mustangs enter play on Friday at no. 14 in the Georgia High School Football Daily preseason poll for Class-A Private.

Prince Avenue is ranked no. 4 by Georgia High School Football Daily. The Wolverines also rank 2nd in the AJC, 3rd in the Georgia Sportswriters, 2nd in Georgia Public Broadcasting, 3rd in Score Atlanta, and 3rd in MaxPreps.

REGION RECORDS: Mount Vernon finished the 2017 season with a 2-4 record on Region 5-A play. Prince Avenue finished 8-1 in Region 8-A, good for second place.

RIGHT MAN, RIGHT PLACE: Head Coach Wayne Dabbs is entering his third season at the helm for the Mustangs and it's safe to say, the Mustang football squad has turned in the right direction. Since his hire three years ago, the Mustangs have gone 17-16, including the program's first GHSA State Playoff berth in 2016 and the first GHSA State Playoff home game in 2017.

Dabbs graduated from Tabernacle Christian School in Gardendale, AL in 2003 where he played football, basketball and baseball.

In football, Dabbs was named the North Jefferson News Offensive Player of the Year in all classifications in 2002 and 2003.

Dabbs took his talents to University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY where he was the leading receiver his senior season.

After graduating from UC in 2007, he spent one season as the running back coach at the University of West Georgia, one year as quarterback coach at Cumberland (2008) and one year as running back coach at Murray State (2009).

Dabbs returned to his high school alma mater from 2010-2012, winning back-to-back State Championships in 2011 and 2012 that included a 17 game winning streak.

He also spent two seasons (2013 and 2014) as the offensive line coach at The Westminster School in Atlanta.

NEW WOLF IN THE PACK FOR PRINCE, BUT FAMILIAR IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Greg Vandagriff is entering his third season at Prince Avenue, but the Wolverine skipper has served two previous stints before arriving in Bogart.

In 2003, Vandagriff was in charge for Kell High School, leading the Longhorns to an 8-2 record in 5-AAAAA play.

From 1999-2001, Vandagriff led the Campbell High School Spartans, going 8-22 in three seasons.

MOUNT VERNON GHSA SEASON OPENERS: The Mustangs are riding a two-game winning streak in GHSA season openers, all under Head Coach Wayne Dabbs. Mount Vernon defeated Whitefield 28-0 at home in 2017 and 41-0 on the road in 2016.

The 2016 victory snapped a four-game skid for the Mustangs that saw the squad lose four straight season openers to Mt. Pisgah (2) and Crawford County (2).

WOLVERINE FORCE: Prince Avenue has been a lethal threat the past several seasons in Class-A Private. Since 2010, Prince Avenue has gone 85-17. The Wolverines have appeared in the State Quarterfinals twice (2013 and 2014), the State Semifinals four times (2011, 2015, 2016, 2017) and the State Finals once (2012).

In the Class-A Private State Championship game in 2012, the Wolverines fell to ELCA 33-0 at the Georgia Dome.

OFFENSE GALORE: Both Prince Avenue and Mount Vernon racked up the yards and touchdowns in 2017. The Wolverines averaged 365 yards per game and scored a total of 59 touchdowns.

The Mustangs averaged 340 yards per contest and posted 37 touchdowns.
