SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday afternoon to return to the win column with a 13-3 victory over the 5A Riverwood High School Raiders (2-3) at the Glenn Campus Softball Field.

Playing as the away team due to Riverwood's field conditions, the Mustangs got out in front early with a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the first, Bella Dishman drove in Savannah Messner, who reached earlier in the inning on a balk, on an infield single for a 1-0 advantage.

MC Springer later grounded out to short to bring home Kendall Slayden for a 2-0 Mustang lead.

The Raiders answered quickly, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the first.

Anaya Chennault doubled to right field to plate Jermiya Tarrance followed by an Emma Bernath double to plate Chennault for a 2-2 game.

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the top of the second inning.

Messner tripled home Lauren Waters, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, for a 3-2 lead.

Mount Vernon padded its lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits.

Carson Watson scored on a passed ball, Gracie Hudgins grounded out to bring home Waters and Slayden executed a sacrifice-bunt to score Messner for a 6-2 edge.

Riverwood cut Mount Vernon's lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning when Avery Andrew singled to right field and came around to score on a Mustang error in the outfield to make it a 6-3 contest.

The Mustangs finished the game on a 7-0 run to bring the run-rule into effect, with all runs coming in the top of the sixth inning.

With the bases loaded, Dishman smashed a triple down the left field line to clear the bases scoring Hudgins, Messner and Slayden to take a 9-3 lead.

Springer later grounded out to second to plate Dishman for a 10-3 game.

After batting around and loading the bases again, Hudgins lifted a fly ball to right field that landed on the chalk to bring home Karley Crim, Sarah Schab and Waters.

The Raiders threatened and loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Slayden struck out Tarrance to end the game.

Dishman finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI's while Hudgins was 1-for-3 with three RBI's.

Slayden (2-5) picked up the win in the circle for Mount Vernon.

The righty tossed six innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four.
