Mustangs Power Past 5A Chamblee Bulldogs 12-7

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team pushed its winning streak to two games on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off the 5A Chamblee Bulldogs (8-3) 12-7 at the Glenn Campus Softball Field.

The Bulldogs bit first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, the first coming on a Grace Brown double to plate Mary Axelson.

Brown later came around to score on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.

Mount Vernon busted out lumber in the bottom of the first frame, scoring nine runs on seven hits.

After Savannah Messner singled, Kendall Slayden hit a ground ball to third that was thrown away by the Bulldog infield to score Messner.

Bella Dishman tied the game at 2-2 with a RBI triple to score Slayden.

MC Springer singled to right field later in the frame to plate Dishman to give Mount Vernon the lead for good at 3-2.

The Mustangs added to their lead when Lauren Waters smashed a a double to left-center to plate Springer and Carson Watson for a 5-2 edge.

Karley Crim followed with a double to right field that scored Waters and Gracie Hudgins for a 7-2 advantage.

Messner, batting for the second time in the inning, came up next and belted a home run over the center field fence for a 9-2 commanding lead.

Mount Vernon added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning when Waters doubled again, this time down the left field line to plate Carson Watson.

Hudgins then singled to right field to plate Waters for an 11-2 lead.

The Bulldogs picked up one run in the top of the third inning when Brown doubled home Mary Axelson for an 11-3 game.

Chamblee added three runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Mount Vernon lead to five.

Ansley Mipham singled home Rachel Lovejoy and later came in to score on a passed ball for an 11-5 contest.

The final run of the inning for the Bulldogs came when Margaret Axelson grounded out to second to plate McKenzie Folsom for an 11-6 game.

Mount Vernon's final run of the contest came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Waters doubled to left-center to plate Watson for a 12-6 lead.

Chamblee added a run in the top of the seventh inning on a Mary Axelson home run to make it a 12-7 game.

Four Mustangs garnered multi-hit games: Messner (3), Watson (3), Waters (3) and Hudgins (2).

Waters finished the game 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI's. Messner and Crim had two RBI's each as well.

Sarah Schab (1-0) took the mound for the first time 2018 and picked up the win for Mount Vernon.

The righty tossed 3.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Slayden threw 3.2 innings of relief action, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Grace Brown took the loss for the Bulldogs, lasting just one-third of an inning, allowing nine runs on seven hits.

The Mustangs (3-5) close out their current four-game homestand after the Labor Day Holiday on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Mount Vernon hosts the Lithia Springs Lions at 5:30 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Softball Field.
