Mustangs Battle Back to Earn Sweep Against Landmark and Greater Atlanta Christian

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. – The Mount Vernon varsity volleyball team picked up two come-from-behind victories on Thursday night against the Landmark Christian War Eagles and the Greater Atlanta Christian School Spartans at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

In the first match against Landmark, Mount Vernon rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 victory.

Leading late in the first set 24-21, the War Eagles ended the game on a 6-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.

But Mount Vernon responded with two commanding wins, taking the second set 25-15 and the decisive third set 25-14.

The Mustangs finished with 53 digs led by the 25 of Zoe Stupek. Teammate Katie Peddle also finished with 14.

Mount Vernon was also active offensively, totaling 36 kills in the match.

Peddle led the squad with 15 kills, while Anjali Singh totaled nine (9).

The Mustangs tallied nine aces in the match that included four from Peddle, who finished the third set with three straight aces. Ella Dawson also picked up four aces.

In the nightcap, the Mustangs found themselves in a familiar situation, dropping the first set to the Spartans 25-20.

But Mount Vernon rebounded, winning the final two sets 25-12 and 25-20 to take the match and earn the sweep.

Mount Vernon totaled 73 digs against Greater Atlanta. Stupek and Peddle led the squad with 29 and 19, respectively.

The Mustangs finished with a whopping 41 kills as well.

Peddle led the way with 17 kills, Maddy Estenson finished with seven and Singh dropped in six.

Mount Vernon totaled five aces, three coming from Peddle and one apiece from Dawson and Singh.

In the middle match of the night, Greater Atlanta defeated Landmark 2-0 (25-16/25-20).

The Mustangs (4-8) are back on the court on Tuesday, Sept. 4, hosting Paideia and Weber at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

First serve against Paidea is scheduled for 5 p.m. followed by Weber at 7 p.m.
