MACON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity football team racked up 572 yards offense, cruising to a 41-17 victory over the First Presbyterian Day School Vikings (0-2) on Friday night at Austin Childers Field at George S. Johnson Memorial Stadium.
After a missed field goal try by FPD to begin the game, the Mustangs took the lead and never relinquished it.
With 7:28 to play in the opening quarter, Blake Kytle connected with John Watson for a 64-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good, but the Mustangs led 6-0.
Three minutes later after forcing the Vikings to punt, Kylte found Justin Douglas for a 15-yard touchdown. Will Lavender's extra point was good to give Mount Vernon a 13-0 edge.
The Vikings got on the board soon after when Coleman Cauley aired out a 51-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Aulds. Austin Cox made the extra point to cut into the Mustang lead at 13-7.
In the second quarter, the Mustang defense held the Vikings scoreless while the offense posted two touchdowns.
With 8:20 to play in the half, Austin Douglas ran in a five-yard touchdown. With Lavender's PAT, Mount Vernon led 20-7.
Kytle later hooked up with Watson again for a 16-yard score with 4:55 to play in the first half. Lavender's PAT was successful to give the Mustangs a 27-7 lead at halftime.
The Vikings cut the lead to 17 in the third quarter when Austin Cox nailed a 25-yard field goal with 5:01 to play in the third quarter.
But Mount Vernon closed the third frame on a 14-0 run with touchdowns from Austin Douglas, one on a 34-yard run and the other a 30-yard rush.
The final score of the contest came from FPD when Cauley found Aulds again for a 32-yard touchdown.
The Mustangs would finish the game running out the clock to secure the victory.
