Mustangs Come Up Short Against 5A Lithia Springs Lions, 10-3

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night, falling to the 5A Lithia Springs Lions (8-4) 10-3 at the Glenn Campus Softball Field to close out a five-game homestand.

The Lions grabbed the lead early and never relinquished it, scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning.

Lauryn Kinkle doubled to left-center field to score Haley Overton followed by an Anayah Baker RBI groundout to third to bring home Kinkle for a 2-0 early edge.

In the bottom half of the first inning, the Mustangs cut the Lion deficit in half scoring one run.

Savannah Messner led off the inning with a single and later came around to score on a failed pickoff attempt that resulted in a throwing error for a 2-1 game.

The Lions bounced back in the top of the second, scoring five runs on five hits while sending nine batters to the plate.

Dia Thomas scored on a passed ball, Audrey Ward scored on a wild pitch and Kinkle smashed a three-run home run over the left field fence for a commanding 7-1 lead.

The Mustangs pulled within four runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Kendall Slayden grounded out to third to plate Lauren Waters, who singled earlier in the inning.

MC Springer followed with a RBI single to right field to plate Bella Dishman for a 7-3 contest.

The Lions added two more runs in the top of the sixth, the first on a Haley Overton single to bring in Kayleigh Franklin followed by a passed ball to score Ward to push the lead to six.

Lithia Springs added the final run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning on a Baker solo home run to center field for a 10-3 lead.

Regan Hutto picked up the win in the circle for the Lions, tossing a complete game while allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Sarah Schab (1-1) took the loss for Mount Vernon, completing two innings while allowing seven runs (four earned) with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Mustangs (3-6) return to the diamond on Thursday, Sept. 6, traveling to Galloway School for a Region 5-A contest.

First pitch against the Scots (3-9) is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Galloway Athletic Complex.
