Mustangs Pick Up 14-2 Region Win at Galloway

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team picked up a key Region 5-A victory on Thursday night, defeating the Galloway Scots (3-11, 0-4 Reg. 5) 14-2 in five innings at the Warren Road Softball Field.

Mount Vernon opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead when MC Springer drove in Kendall Slayden on a line drive to right field.

The Scots evened the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, but Mount Vernon responded with two runs in the top of the second to take the lead for good.

Sofia Wise doubled to left field to score Karley Crim (courtesy running for Sarah Schab). Wise later crossed the plate when she stole home to give the Mustangs a 3-1 advantage.

The Mustangs added four runs in the top of the third inning for a 7-1 edge.

With the bases loaded, Carson Watson smashed a triple to right field to plate Slayden, Bella Dishman, and MC Springer .

Schab followed with a single to score Watson for a six-run edge.

The Scots added a run in the bottom half of the third inning to pull within five at 7-2.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Mustangs opened up the flood gates in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs on eight hits.

Watson singled to center field to score Springer, Wise doubled to center to plate Watson, and Gracie Hudgins singled to right to bring home Schab for a 10-2 lead.

Wise would later come home on a passed ball and Slayden singled to left to bring in Hudgins.

To cap off the inning, Dishman doubled to left to score Savannah Messner and Slayden to bring the run-rule into effect.

Schab (2-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.

The righty tossed four innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four batters.

The Mustangs (4-6, 1-1 Reg. 5-A) return to the diamond on Saturday, Sept. 8, taking on Chamblee and St. Pius.

Both games will be played at St. Pius. First pitch against Chamblee is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. followed by St. Pius at 2:30 p.m.
