SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team snapped a three-game slide on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Landmark Christian War Eagles (10-7, 3-3 Reg. 5-A) 6-5 in nine innings at the Glenn Campus Softball Field in Region 5-A action.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Kendall Slayden laid down a bunt that was thrown away by the War Eagle infield. Savannah Messner, who walked to lead off the inning, came around to score on another throwing miscue by Landmark to take the win in walk-off fashion.
Landmark jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, breaking the 0-0 deadlock when Katelyn Lee crossed home on a double steal.
In the top of the third inning, the War Eagles added two runs for a 3-0 advantage when Amelia Chavez reached on a throwing error by the Mustang infield to allow Lee and Julia Allen to score.
Mount Vernon picked up its first run of the contest in bottom of the third inning when Carson Watson reached on a throwing error by the War Eagle infield and came all the way around to score for a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs evened up the game at 3-3.
Sarah Schab singled to plate MC Springer followed by a Watson double to bring home courtesy runner Karley Crim.
The Mustangs took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Springer singled to right field to plate Slayden for a 4-3 edge.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mount Vernon added an insurance run on a Savannah Messner double to plate Watson for a 5-3 lead.
That run would prove to be critical as Landmark rallied to score twice in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.
With two outs and two on, Chavez singled down the right field line to bring in Allen and Olivia Hardeman.
Both squads battled through a scoreless eighth inning, the Mustangs retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning and snagged the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth.
Kendall Slayden picked up the win in the circle for Mount Vernon throwing six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while racking up five strikeouts.
Allen was tabbed with the loss for Landmark.
The Mustangs (5-8, 2-2 Reg. 5-A) return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 12, hosting the 3A Pace Academy Knights.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Softball Field.
