Mustangs Sweep Home Matches Against Pinecrest and Riverwood

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity volleyball team picked up a sweep on Thursday night, defeating the Pinecrest Paladins 2-0 followed by a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the 5A Riverwood Raiders at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

In the first match of the night against Pinecrest, the Mustangs took the first two sets 25-12 and 25-14 to win the match.

Mount Vernon totaled 45 digs, led by the the 13 of Zoe Stupek and seven from Olivia Ramsey.

Mackenzie Morris totaled nine assists while teammate Lauren Roush added seven.

Eight different players record a kill in the match, paced by the five kills from Katie Peddle and Anjali Singh.

The Mustangs also finished with eight aces against Pinecrest with Singh leading the squad with three.

In the nightcap, the Mustangs dropped the first set against the Raiders 22-25 in a back-and-forth battle that saw the score tied 16 times.

But Mount Vernon took care of business with ease in the second match 25-7 that included a 12-0 run to close the set, to force a decisive third game.

Playing to 15 in the final set, the Raiders jumped out to a 10-5 lead that forced the Mustangs to call a timeout.

The extra time was just what the Mustangs needed. Mount Vernon closed the set on a 10-2 run to seal the victory in dramatic fashion.

The Mustangs stopped a lethal Raider attack with 66 digs in the match. Stupek finished with 29 digs while Peddle added 14.

Morris racked up 18 assists while Peddle and Maddy Estenson led the team in kills with nine and eight, respectively.

The Mustangs dropped in eight aces as well. Estenson finished with three aces while Morris and Stupek added two.

Mount Vernon (11-9) returns to the court on Monday, Sept. 17, traveling to Holy Innocents for area matches against Paideia and Atlanta International School (AIS).

First serve against Paideia is scheduled for 6 p.m. with AIS to follow at 7 p.m.
