Mustangs Gallop Past Walker Wolverines in Five Innings, 13-1

MARIETTA, Ga. - The Mont Vernon varsity softball team pushed its winning streak to two games on Thursday night, trouncing the Walker Wolverines (6-8) 13-1 in five innings at the Allgood Athletic Complex.

With two outs in the top of the first inning, the Mustangs broke the scoreless deadlock on a Carson Watson single to score MC Springer for a 1-0 lead.

Springer would later score on a passed ball for an early 2-0 advantage.

The Wolverines cut into the Mustang lead in the bottom of the second inning when Alison Hebert reached on an infield error that allowed Olivia Hall to score for a 2-1 game.

The Mustangs picked up two runs in the top of the third inning when Sofia Wise singled to right field to bring home Bella Dishman and Springer for a 4-1 lead.

Mount Vernon padded its lead in the top of the fourth inning, adding two more runs on two hits along with some help from the Wolverine defense.

Savannah Messner, who reached on a walk, scored on an infield error followed by a Dishman RBI single to left field to plate Kendall Slayden for a 6-1 edge.

The Mustangs brought the run-rule into effect in the top of the fifth inning scoring seven runs.

Wise doubled home Watson, Gracie Hudgins singled to bring in Wise, and Messner doubled to plate Hudgins and Lauren Waters for a commanding 10-1 lead.

Slayden picked up an RBI on a groundout that scored Karley Crim, Messner came around to score on a Wolverine error and Watson doubled home Dishman to push the lead to 13-1.

Kendall Slayden picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.

The righty allowed one run on three hits while striking out three batters.

The Mustangs (6-8) return to the diamond on Monday, Sept. 17, hosting the 5A Arabia Mountain Rams.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Softball Field.
