Mustangs Conquer Landmark Christian War Eagles 55-0 En Route to Region Win

FAIRBURN, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity football team cruised to a 55-0 Region 5-A victory over the Landmark Christian War Eagles (1-4, 0-2 Reg. 5-A) on Friday night, Sept. 21, at Bill Thron Stadium

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Mustangs struck on the second play from scrimmage when Austin Douglas rushed in an eight-yard touchdown. Will Lavender's extra point was good for a 7-0 lead.

The Mustang defense forced the War Eagles to turnover on downs on its second offensive possession. Blake Kytle followed with a 61-yard pass to John Watson for a touchdown with 7:36 to play in the first quarter. Lavender made his extra point for a 14-0 lead.

On the following kickoff, the War Eagles fumbled and Mount Vernon recovered on its next offensive play. Kytle connected to Austin Douglas for a 31-yard touchdown. Lavender's PAT was good and the Mustangs led 21-0 less than five minutes into the contest.

Mount Vernon scored its final touchdown of the first period when Parker Corley rushed in a three-yard score with 29 seconds remaining. Lavender connected on the PAT for a commanding 28-0 lead.

The Mustang offense continued to roll in the second quarter, scoring three times.

Kytle found Justin Douglas for a 53-yard touchdown, Will Mitcham caught a one-yard touchdown and Corley intercepted Landmark quarterback Jax Fisher and returned it 70-yards for a touchdown. Lavender missed one of his three PAT's to give Mount Vernon a 48-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Mount Vernon scored its final touchdown in the third quarter with 5:35 to play when Skylar Stefaniak-Early rushed in a 95-yard touchdown. Lavender's PAT put the Mustangs ahead 55-0.

Stefaniak-Early lead the Mustangs in rushing with 119 yards on six carries with one touchdown.

Kytle finished 9-for-11 with 181 yards and four touchdowns.

Watson paced the Mustangs in receiving with 61 yards.

The Mustang defense allowed just 106 yards of offense and forced one fumble and three interceptions into the hands of Alex VanLandingham, Corley and Parker Carmen.

The Mustangs (4-1, 2-0 Reg. 5-A) return to action on Friday, Sept. 28, hosting Holy Innocents for Homecoming 2018.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Football Field.
