Mustangs Open Region Tournament with Split Against Holy Innocents and Landmark

FAIRBURN, Ga. - The no. 6 seeded Mount Vernon varsity softball team hit the road on Monday afternoon, competing in the GHSA Region 5-1A Tournament at Landmark Christian School.

The Mustangs earned a split at the end of play, taking down the no. 3 seeded Holy Innocents Golden Bears 3-2 in a see-saw affair before falling to the no. 2 seeded host Landmark Christian War Eagles 8-0 in five innings.

The Mustangs broke a 0-0 tie over the Bears in the top of the third inning when Bella Dishman doubled to bring home Kendall Slayden, who also doubled, for a 1-0 advantage.

Holy Innocents tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning on a throwing error by the Mustangs.

Mount Vernon reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Gracie Hudgins doubled to bring home Carson Watson for a 2-1 edge.

Holy Innocents evened the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning but Mount Vernon rose to the occasion in the top of the seventh inning.

Savannah Messner reached on a walk, stole second and came around to score on a Dishman game-winning single.

Slayden retired the side in the bottom half of the seventh inning to secure the win.

In the second game of the evening against Landmark, the Mount Vernon dug itself into a 4-0 hole early, with all runs unearned.

The War Eagles added four more after five innings of action to bring the run rule into effect to take the win.

The Mustangs (8-11, 4-5 Reg. 5-1A) return to the diamond in the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Mount Vernon will take on Strong Rock in an elimination game played at Holy Innocents at 4:30 p.m.
