SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - After a tough loss, accompanied with a disappointing showing two weeks ago at Wesleyan, the Mount Vernon varsity football team had to wait quite a while to get back in the win column.

The wait was well worth it.

Rested, rejuvenated and revived, the Mustangs (6-2, 4-1 Reg. 5-1A) ousted the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats (0-8, 0-5 Reg. 5-1A) 37-0 at the Glenn Campus Football Field on Friday afternoon, Oct. 19.

The Mustangs broke the scoreless barrier less than a minute into the game.

Blake Kytle connected to Austin Douglas for an 18-yard touchdown at the 11:17 mark of the first quarter. Will Lavender added the PAT to give Mount Vernon a 7-0 lead.

After forcing a punt, the Mustangs struck again with 5:20 to play in the opening period when Parker Corley found Justin Douglas for a 15-yard touchdown. Lavender, again, made the extra point to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.

After another stop on defense, Mount Vernon added its final touchdown of the first quarter with 2:46 to play when Austin Douglas broke loose at the line of scrimmage and ran in a 46-yard touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but Mount Vernon had a comfortable 20-0 lead.

The Mustangs kept the pedal to the metal in the second quarter as well, outscoring the Bobcats 17-0.

With 10:14 to play in the second period, Kyltle found Justin Douglas for a 38-yard touchdown and Lavender made the PAT for a 24-0 advantage.

Less than three minutes later, Austin Douglas answered with a 71-yard touchdown run down the sideline. Lavender's PAT sailed through the uprights for a 31-0 lead.

The Mustangs received the ball back with just over two minutes to play in the half and methodically marched down the field to set up what would be the final scoring play of the game.

With seven seconds to play, Lavender booted a 30-yard field goal over the crossbar and in between the uprights as time expired for a 34-0 lead at halftime.

Neither team would score in the running-clock second half.

The Mount Vernon defense pitched a shutout, allowing just 41 yards of offense and holding the Bobcats to 11 yards rushing on 29 attempts.

Meanwhile, the Mustang offense rolled again, racking up 428 yards (205 rushing and 163 passing).

Austin Douglas finished with 84 yards rushing on three carries to go over 1,000 yards for the season.

Kytle finished the game 6-for-9, 124 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions as he surpassed the 1,500 yards passing mark for the year.

Justin Douglas paced the squad in receiving with 114 yards on four catches.

Mount Vernon finished with 11 first downs (seven rushing, three passing, and one by penalty) while committing just two penalties in throughout Friday's contest.

The Mustangs return to the gridiron on Friday, Oct. 26, traveling to no. 1 ranked Eagle's Landing Christian Academy Chargers for a chance at taking the GHSA Region 5-1A Title.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Commitment Field in McDonough, Ga.
