First Set Rally Sends Mustangs Past FPD Lady Vikings 3-0 in First Round of GHSA AA/A Private State Tournament

McDONOUGH, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity volleyball team used a come-from-behind first set victory en route to a 3-0 sweep over the First Presbyterian Day School Lady Vikings in the first round of the GHSA Class AA/A Private State Tournament at Eagle's Landing Christian Academy on Saturday afternoon.

With the first set tied at 16, the Lady Vikings rallied to go on a 8-2 run for what seemed a commanding 24-18 lead and first set win.

But the Mustangs rallied together to rattle off an 8-0 spurt to take the first set over the Lady Vikings 26-24 in the best-of-five series.

That energy fueled the final two set for Mount Vernon, taking the second set 25-16 and the third set 25-17.

In the second set, the Mustangs and Lady Vikings battled to a 6-6 tie in the early going.

Mount Vernon rattled off a 9-4 run to take a 15-10 lead.

FPD pulled within three at 17-14 before the Mustangs closed the door with an 8-2 surge for a victory and a 2-0 series lead.

In the third set, the Mustangs took the lead at 2-1 and never looked back.

Mount Vernon led midway through the final set 10-6 and pushed the lead to 21-12 via an 11-6 surge.

After three points from the Lady Vikings, the Mustangs closed out the match with a 3-0 run to seal the victory.

The Mustangs finished with 92 digs, 37 assists, 42 kills, five blocks and five aces in the match.

Katie Peddle totaled 26 digs and 19 kills, including the final two kills in the first set. Olivia Ramsey finished with 24 digs as well.

MacKenzie Morris aided in the scoring for Mount Vernon, picking up 34 assists on the day.

Along with Peddle's 17 kills, Anjali Singh dropped in 11 while teammate Maddy Estenson added seven.

Singh led the team in blocks with four, with three coming in the final set.

The Mustangs dropped in five aces on the day. Morris paced the team with two.

The Mustangs, the no. 2 seed from Area-1, will take on the winner of Eagle's Landing Christian/Savannah Country Day match in the Sweet 16 on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
