MABLETON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon 5th/6th grade football team captured its second Metro-10 Championship in as many years on Saturday, Oct. 20, taking down the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 32-6 in convincing fashion.

The Mustangs took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter when Walker Warshaw broke away for a 40-yard touchdown run. Nathan Peji added the two-point conversion for the early advantage.

In the second quarter, Warshaw struck again for a nine-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead.

The Mustangs added another touchdown before halftime to lead 20-0 on a Liam Whalen score.

In the second half, the Mustangs got on the board again in the third quarter on another Warshaw touchdown from 41-yards out.

In the final period, the Mustangs allowed one touchdown and Warshaw rushed for his fourth score of the game to claim a 32-6 victory and the championship.

Head Coach Alex Sims noted that the teams' effort in Saturday's victory was crucial.

"Led by Walker Warshaw, some key runs by Brayden Lewis converting big third downs, and a stingy defense that frustrated Whitefield‘s star QB, we were able to secure the victory," Sims said.

The Mustangs finished the season with 6-1 record and its second consecutive Metro-10 Title.

"We are really proud of how our team did not quit after losing to Whitefield in a heartbreaking overtime game in the regular season," Sims said. "We used that game as a spring board, putting up over 30 points in the next four games, including the championship, and gave up no more than 12 points."

"They answered the call from the coaches and can call themselves back-to-back champions," Sims added.

Congratulations, 5th/6th Football Mustangs! Back-to-Back Metro-10 Champions!
