SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - After an emotional loss at ELCA last Friday, the Mount Vernon varsity football team banded together to defeat the Strong Rock Christian Patriots (3-7, 2-5 Reg. 5-1A) 21-3 on Senior Night in the final regular season game.

The win total of seven marks the highest of any Mount Vernon team in the regular season in program history.

The Mustangs fell behind early late in the first quarter when Will Minihan nailed a 27-yard field goal to put the Patriots up 3-0 with 3:53 to play in the opening frame.

But that deficit was quickly erased on the ensuing kickoff.

Austin Douglas returned Minihan's kick up the sideline for a 65-yard touchdown. Will Lavender made the extra point to give Mount Vernon a 7-3 lead with 3:39 to play in the opening period.

The Mustangs pushed the lead to 14-3 with 6:25 to play in the second quarter when Blake Kytle found Austin Douglas on a screen pass that resulted in an 84-yard score. Lavender cashed in the PAT as well.

The final score of the contest came early in the fourth quarter.

With 10:25 to play in the game, Kytle threw a strike over the middle to Justin Douglas for a 36-yard touchdown. Lavender nailed the extra point for a 21-3 lead.

Austin Douglas led the squad in rushing with 67 yards on 13 carries as well as receiving with one catch for 84 yards.

Kytle was 11-for-14 with 176 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Demetrius Knight led the Patriots in rushing with 85 yards on 25 carries.

The dual-threat quarterback was also 7-for-19 passing for 85 yards.

Nick Hassan was the leading target for Strong Rock with three catches for 36 yards.
