Softball Lands Three on All-Region 5 Team

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team landed three players on the GHSA Class-A All-Region 5 Team, voted on last week by all region coaches.

Freshmen Bella Dishman and Savannah Messner were named to the All-Region 5 First Team while teammate Kendall Slayden was named to the All-Region 5 Second Team.

Dishman had a stellar first season for the Mustangs.

In 22 games played, Dishman led the team in batting average (.427), was second in on-base percentage (.434) and second in slugging percentage (.653). Her overall OPS was second for the Mustangs as well at 1.08.

Dishman also paced the Mustangs in hits (32) and RBI's (20). The lefty picked up her first career home run in Mount Vernon's first round playoff series against Christian Heritage as well.

Behind the plate, Dishman was a reliable catcher, with a fielding percentage of .875.

Messner, meanwhile, shined at shortstop all season long for Mount Vernon.

In 22 games played, the righty was second in batting average (.413), first in on-base percentage (.470), first in slugging (.680) and first in OPS (1.150).

Messner, a lethal threat in the leadoff position, finished the season with seven triples and 10 of her 31 total hits were for extra bases.

Slayden, also a freshman, was third in batting average for Mount Vernon at .333. She also finished fourth in on-base percentage (.385) and fifth in slugging (.417) and OPS (.801).

Slayden proved to be a reliable arm in the circle for Mount Vernon in her freshman campaign.

The righty led the staff with 82 strikeouts and posted an ERA of 3.60.

The Mustangs finished the 2018 season at 8-14 and 3-5 in Region 5-1A, advancing to the first round of the GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament vs. Christian Heritage.
