Mustangs Sweep Season Opener Against Cross Keys Indians

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity girls and boys basketball teams opened up the 2018-19 season at home on Thursday night, Nov. 15, hosting the 5A Cross Keys Indians at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

Both squads took care of business in convincing fashion, with the varsity girls winning 80-4 followed by the varsity boys with a 78-12 triumph.

In the girls contest, the Mustangs jumped out to a 26-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Mount Vernon matched that point total in the second frame while allowing just two points for a 52-2 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Mustangs outscored the Indians 28-2 to seal the victory.

Five players scored in double figures for Mount Vernon: Gracis Hudgins (12), Katieanne Peterson (12), Jessicka Woods (12), MC Springer (11) and Jane Holliday (10).

In the nightcap, the varsity boys took down the Indians 78-12 behind a strong opening half.

Mount Vernon led 38-2 at the end of the first quarter and rattled off a 16-4 run in the second period for a 54-6 halftime lead.

The Mustangs won the second half 24-6 to take the win.

Morgan Mulrain and Alex Morge led the Mustang in scoring, both dropping in 21 points.

Morge scored all of his points on 3-pointers (7) while Mulrain hit four from downtown.

Jordan Wicker posted 20 points in his Mustang debut as well.

Mulrain, Morge and Wicker each picked up three steals in Thursday's contest. Wicker totaled five rebounds while Mulrain pulled down three.

The varsity girls (1-0) return to action Friday, Nov. 16, hosting the Pinecrest Academy Paladins at 1:30 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

Both teams will close out play before the Thanksgiving break on Saturday, Nov. 17, hosting the 5A Riverwood Raiders at 3:30 p.m. (varsity girls) and 5 p.m. (varsity boys).
