SANDY SPRINGS, Ga - The Mount Vernon varsity boys basketball team jumped out to a 21-point lead at halftime and held off a second half surge from the Paideia School to pick up a 70-62 region victory over the Pythons on Tuesday night, Jan. 8, at the Glenn Campus Gymnasium.

Mount Vernon opened up the contest with a 25-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Pythons 15-4 in the second period for a 40-19 advantage at halftime.

But the Pythons came out with purpose in the second half, outscoring the Mustangs 16-13 in the third quarter to cut the Mustang lead to 53-39.

The fourth quarter was a rollercoaster ride, with the Pythons pulling within nine points late in the quarter thanks to a 27-17 run.

But a steal and score by Austin Douglas in the final minute sealed the win for the Mustangs to push Mount Vernon's streak to two.

Five players were in double figures for the Mustangs, led by the 18 points of Alex Morge, who connected on six 3-pointers to pace the squad.

Morgan Mulrain netted 12 points (two 3-pointers), Austin Douglas finished with 11 points and Will Mitcham and Justin Douglas notched 10 points.

In all, the Mustangs (5-10, 2-0 Reg. 5-1A) finished with a whopping twelve 3-pointers in the contest.

Paideia (5-10, 0-2 Reg. 5-1A) was paced by the 19 points of Jaylan Troutman and 12 points of Leo Saltzman.
