OCILLA, Ga. - Three Mustang wrestlers are packing their bags for the GHSA State Traditional Wrestling Tournament this coming weekend.
This past weekend, Mount Vernon competed at the GHSA 1A/Section A Sectionals hosted by Irwin County High School.
Blake Kytle (138 lb.), Erik Dodder (182 lb.) and Jonathan Hammond (220 lb.) all advanced in their respective weight classes to earn a trip to State.
Below is a recap of how each wrestler advanced to State competition.
Blake Kytle (138 lb.)
Kytle pinned a wrestler from Savannah Christian in the quarterfinals, fell in the semifinals and then pinned a wrestler from Crawford County in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third/fourth place match.
Placement: Fourth
Erik Dodder (182 lb.)
Dodder pinned a wrestler from Truetlen County in the quarterfinals then upset the no. 1 seed from Landmark in the semifinals. Dodder fell in the finals to Telfair County in a hard fought match 8-3.
Placement: Second
Jonathan Hammond (220lb.)
Hammond pinned a wrestler from Telfair County in the quarterfinals before falling to the no. 1 seed from Irwin County in the semifinals. Hammond then secured a pin over Calvary Day in the consolation semifinals followed by another pin against a wrestler from St. Francis to place third overall.
Placement: Third
Kytle, Dodder and Hammond will be in action Thursday-Saturay, Feb. 14-16, at the GHSA State Traditional Wrestling Tournament in Macon, Ga.
All matches will take place inside the Macon Centreplex.
