Baseball Opens 2019 Season with 5-1 Victory Over Forest Park

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team (1-0) got the 2019 season off on the right foot, knocking off the 6A Forest Park Panthers 5-1 in three innings on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14, at the Glenn Campus Baseball Field.

After staking the Panthers to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Mustangs outscored Forest Park 5-0 over the final three innings to take the victory.

The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the first when Tres Gonzalez scored on a passed ball to even the game at 1-1.

Alex VanLandingham followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Nate Anderson for a 2-1 advantage.

Mount Vernon added three more runs in the bottom of the second.

Alex Thomas walked, stole second, advanced to third on an infield error and came around to score on an error by the Forest Park outfield for a 3-1 lead.

Mount Vernon's fourth run of the game came via an RBI single by Anderson who drove in Gonzalez for a 4-1 Mustang edge.

Jackson Denney drove in Mount Vernon's fifth and final run with a single to center field to score Anderson for a 5-1 lead.

Jack Sims (1-0) picked up the win for the Mustangs tossing three innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out six batters.

The Mustangs return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 16, traveling to Lakeview Academy.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Gainesville, Ga.
