Baseball Earns Shutout Over ELCA Chargers on the Road, 10-0

McDONOUGH, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team kept its winning streak alive Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 26, defeating the Eagles Landing Christian Academy (ELCA) Chargers 10-0 in six innings for their seventh consecutive victory.

After two scoreless innings, the Mustangs struck for a five runs in the top of the third inning.

After Tres Gonzalez stole home for a 1-0 lead, Alex VanLandingham doubled to left field to plate Nate Anderson.

Jackson Denney then followed with a single to right field to bring home VanLandingham for a 3-0 lead.

Two batters later, Jake Bloodworth hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Denney followed by a Cole Forrest infield ground ball that was booted to score Jack Sims for a 5-0 edge.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Mustangs padded the lead with one run when Gonzalez, who reached earlier in the inning on a single and advanced to third, scored on a passed ball for a 6-0 advantage.

Another run came for the Mustangs in the top of the fifth inning on an infield error by the Chargers to plate Denney for a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs brought the run rule into effect in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on three hits.

Anderson singled home Gonzalez, VanLandingham singled in Anderson and Sims grounded out to shortstop to allow VanLandingham to score for a 10-0 advantage.

Jack Mullen picked up the win on the mound for Mount Vernon, tossing a complete game shutout.

The righty allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six frames.

The Mustangs will return to action after Interim and Spring Break on Friday, March 15, traveling to Strong Rock Christian School.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Locust Grove, Ga.
