Mustangs Take Two from Lakeview Academy to Extend Winning Streak to Thirteen

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team extended its winning streak to 13 games on Saturday afternoon, March 23, sweeping the Lakeview Academy Lions in a home doubleheader 10-0 and 5-3.

In Game One, Mount Vernon used a six run first inning to take the lead for good.

Jack Sims singled home Nate Anderson, Blake Kytle singled to score Sims, and Cole Forrest reached on an error with the bases loaded to plate Jake Bloodworth, Jackson Denney and Kytle for a 5-0 advantage.

The final run of the inning came on a Tres Gonzalez RBI single to center field to bring in Forrest for a 6-0 lead.

The Mustangs scored another run in the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead when Sims grounded out to first to score Gonzalez.

An inning later, Mount Vernon posted two more runs, the first on a Gonzalez groundout to bring in Kytle and the second on a wild pitch to score Alex Mette for a 9-0 edge.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Mustangs ended the game via run rule on a Denney double to left field to score Bloodworth for a 10-0 victory.

Gonzalez tossed a complete game gem en route to the win.

The lefty threw five scoreless innings, allowed two hits and struck out three batters without surrendering a walk.

Ben Tyrrel tossed one scoreless inning of relief as well.

In Game Two, the Mustangs battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to finish off the doubleheader with a 5-3 win.

With Mount Vernon playing as the visitor in the second game, Lakeview broke the scoreless barrier in the bottom of the first when Skyler Thellman doubled to left field to bring home Andrew Estes for a 1-0 Lion lead.

After a scoreless second frame, the Mustangs took the lead in the top of the third inning, plating two runs on one hit.

Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Forrest followed by an Alex VanLandingham double to plate Gonzalez for a 2-1 Mustang advantage.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Mount Vernon added another run in the fifth inning when Alex Thomas coaxed a bases loaded walk to score David Adkins for a 3-1 Mustang lead.

Lakeview responded in the bottom half, scoring twice to tie the game at 3-3.

Sam Stewart drew a bases loaded walk to bring in KJ Millwood followed by Thellman sacrifice fly to center field to plate Estes.

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Sims reached on an infield error to score Anderson for a 4-3 contest.

An inning later, Mount Vernon added a key insurance run when Forrest doubled to right field to bring in Kytle for a 5-3 lead.

Sims picked up the win on the hill for Mount Vernon, tossing 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

The Mustangs (13-0) return to the field on Monday, March 25, hosting 2A Westlake Lions.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Baseball Field.
