Winning Streak to Fourteen as Mustangs Battle Past Paideia Pythons, 8-3

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team continued it winning ways on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Paideia School Pythons 8-3 for the teams' fourteenth consecutive victory in as many tries.

The Mustangs got on the board early, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

After a double steal by Nate Anderson and Alex VanLandingham, Jack Sims reached on a throwing error by the Python infield to bring home Anderson.

Jake Bloodworth followed with a fielder's choice to score VanLandingham for an early 2-0 advantage.

Mount Vernon continued to be aggressive at the dish, adding three more runs in the bottom of the second frame.

With two outs, VanLandingham doubled down the left field line to score Blake Kytle followed by a Python outfield error on a ball hit by Jack Sims to plate Anderson and Alex Mette for a 5-0 lead.

The Pythons got back in the game in the top of the third inning by scoring two runs.

With two on and two out, Sam Boswell doubled to center field to bring around Jack Colton and John Bruce for a 5-2 contest.

The Mustangs got one run back in the bottom of the third inning.

With two down and Kytle aboard after a single, Tres Gonzalez smashed a double to center field to allow Kytle to come around the bases for a 6-2 lead.

Mount Vernon's final two runs of the game came an inning later.

VanLandingham singled to left to score Anderson and Bloodworth singled to left to bring in Alex Mette for an 8-2 edge.

The Pythons mustered just one run the remainder of the contest, scoring in the top of the fifth inning on a Boswell double to plate Bruce for an 8-3 game.

Jack Mullen picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs.

The righty tossed five innings, allowed three runs (all earned), and seven hits while striking out five batters.

Ben Tyrrel worked two scoreless innings of relief and struck out two batters as well.

For the game, VanLandingham was 2-2 with two RBI's and one run scored. Bloodworth was 1-4 with two RBI's as well.

The Mustangs (14-0, 6-0 Reg. 5-1A) return to action on Saturday, March 30, traveling to Jenkins High School in Savannah, Ga.

First pitch against the 3A Warriors is scheduled for noon.
