SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team took down the Jenkins High School Warriors 12-0 on Saturday afternoon, March 30, for their fifteenth win in as many tries to remain unbeaten for the 2019 campaign.
After a scoreless first inning, the Mustangs exploded for five runs in the top of the second inning.
Jake Bloodworth singled to score Jack Sims for a 1-0 lead followed by a two-run home run by Jackson Denney that cleared the left field fence to plate Bloodowrth for a 3-0 advantage.
Later in the inning, Alex VanLandingham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that brought in Charlie Baynton followed by a Jack Sims free pass to plate Cole Forrest.
The Mustangs added three more runs in the top of the third inning for an 8-0 lead.
Tres Gonzalez singled to drive in Denney and Forrest followed by a VanLandingham sacrifice fly to score Blake Kytle.
Mount Vernon put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three more runs for an 11-0 advantage.
Forrest walked with the bases loaded to score Bloodworth, Kytle singled to bring in Alex Mette and Gonzalez walked to plate Baynton.
Mount Vernon's final run of the contest came in the top of the fifth on a Grayson Goerdel singled singled, allowing Bloodworth to score for a 12-0 lead.
Ben Tyrrel picked up the win on the hill for Mount Vernon, tossing four innings of shutout ball while allowing one hit and striking out five batters.
Forrest work one inning of relief as well, striking out two.
The Mustangs (15-0) return to action on Tuesday, April 2, hosting the Holy Innocents Gold Bears in a key Region 5-1A matchup.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Glenn Campus Baseball Field.
