Mustangs Open Up 2019 Campaign with 11-3 Victory Over North Cobb Christian

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team opened up with 2019 season with a bang on Tuesday night, August 6, defeating the North Cobb Christian Eagles 11-3 in five innings at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

Mount Vernon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with the first run coming off a Bella Dishman triple to bring home Savanna Messner .

Kendall Slayden followed with a single to short stop to allow Bishman to score for a 2-0 advantage.

The final run of the inning came on a double steal that saw Karley Crim take second and Slayden home for a 3-0 lead.

After allowing a run in the top of the second inning, the Mustangs scored twice in the bottom half for a 5-1 edge when Dishman reached on an error to plate Gracie Hudgins and Slayden singled home Messner.

The Eagles added two runs in the top of the third frame, but Mount Vernon kept North Cobb at bay by adding two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Dishman doubled home Messner followed by a Sarah Schab single to bring in Dishman to go up 7-3.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Mustangs added four runs to bring the run rule into effect.

Hudgins single home Sofia Wise, Hudgins scored on a passed ball, Slayden singled to plate Messner and Schab singled to bring home Dishman to end the contest at 11-3.

Sarah Schab (1-0) picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.

The righty tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

Rylee Greaves took the loss for the Eagles.

Dishman, Schab and Slayden combined for seven RBI's in the victory.

Messner scored a game-high four runs as well.

The Mustangs (1-0) return to action Friday-Saturday, August 9-10, at the Chamblee High School Round-Robin Tournament.

Mount Vernon takes on St. Pius on Friday, August 9 at 4 p.m. followed by games against Southwest Dekalb and Chamblee on Saturday, August 10 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

All games will be played at Chamblee High School.
