Softball Recap: Chamblee High School Round-Robin Tournament

ATLANTA – The Mount Vernon varsity softball team dropped two out of three games this past weekend at the Chamblee High School Round-Robin Tournament, falling to the St. Pius Golden Lions 12-4 on Friday, August 9 followed by a 5-3 loss to the Southwest Dekalb Panthers and a 6-2 victory over the Chamblee Bulldogs on Saturday, August 10.

On Friday, Mount Vernon led 4-0 after four and a half innings before surrendering 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth to allow St. Pius to come away with the victory.

Bella Dishman was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s while Sarah Schab and Sofia Wise each picked up one RBI each.

On Saturday, the Mustangs dropped the first game of their doubleheader to the Panthers 5-3.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings before the Mustangs tied the contest in the top of the third frame when Ruby Burnett and Savanna Messner stole home.

The Panthers added three runs in the bottom of third inning and the Mustangs could never recover.

Six different players had a hit for Mount Vernon while Messner scored two runs.

In the finale against Chamblee, the Mustangs buckled down and came away with a key 6-2 victory.

Mount Vernon scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead when Schab singled home Messner followed by a Wise single to plate Schab.

The Bulldogs tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the first but Mount Vernon regained the lead in the second frame and never relinquished it when Dishman doubled to center field to plate Ruby Burnett for a 3-2 advantage.

The Mustangs added two more in the top of the fourth inning on an infield single by Kendall Slayden to score Burnett and Messner for a 5-2 lead.

The final run of the contest came when Slayden singled to left to bring in Messner in the top of the sixth inning for a 6-2 lead.

The Mustangs finished with 16 hits in the game, led by the three of Schab and Burnett.

Messner, Dishman, Slayden, Jane Holliday, and Wise each had two hits as well.

Schab tossed a complete game for the Mustangs in the circle against Chamblee.

The righty scattered six hits while allowing just two runs with three strikeouts.

Mount Vernon (2-2) returns to action on Tuesday, August 13, hosting the 1A Walker School Wolverines.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
