Mustangs Take Down Riverwood Raiders in Five Innings, 13-4

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team pushed its winning streak to two games on Wednesday afternoon, August 21, defeating the 5A Riverwood Raiders 13-4 in five innings at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

With one runner on base in the bottom of the fifth and leading 11-4, Savanna Messner blasted a walk-off two-run home run to send the Mustangs to victory.

Mount Vernon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jane Holliday doubled to bring home Bella Dishman.

The Raiders pushed ahead 2-1 in the top of the third frame on an Ava Murray double to score Jermiya Tarrance followed by a Mustang infield error that allowed Murray to score.

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the bottom half of the third inning.

Kendall Slayden doubled home Dishman, Lauren Waters singled in Sarah Schab and Slayden, and Karley Crim tripled to bring around Waters for a 5-2 lead.

The Raiders got one run back in the top of the fourth inning when Tarrance bunted in Avery Andrews for a 5-3 contest.

Mount Vernon added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

Schab singled in Messner, Slayden drew a bases loaded walk to score Dishman, and Mary Fuentes hit a triple down the right field line to plate Holliday, Schab and Slayden.

In the top of the fifth, Riverwood posted one run on an Alisa Steel single to center field to plate Andrews.

In the bottom half, Messner walked off to seal the win for Mount Vernon.

Schab picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs tossing three innings, striking out seven batters and allowing no walks.

Slayden pitched two innings of relief and recorded three strikeouts as well.

The Mustangs are back in action on Thursday, August 22, traveling to Trinity Christian for a key Region 5-1A contest.

First pitch against the Lions is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Sharpsburg, Ga.
