Football Drops Season Opener at Home to Prince Avenue, 54-28

ATLANTA – The Mount Vernon varsity football team opened the 2019 season on Friday, August 23, falling to the Prince Avenue Wolverines 54-28 at the Upper Campus Football Field.

Mount Vernon got into an early hole and could never recover, allowing three touchdowns in the first quarter.

Prince Avenue quarterback Brock Vandagriff rushed in a score from seven yards out, Trey Stiles crossed the goal line on a six-yard rush and Dustin Ridings recovered a fumble and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolverines a 21-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Mount Vernon got on the board with 8:49 to play in the second quarter when quarterback Blake Kytle connected with Andrew Douglas on a 25-yard touchdown.

But on the ensuing kickoff, the Prince’s Zac Dyer returned it 95 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but the Wolverines still held the lead at 27-7.

After receiving the kickoff, the Mustangs drove down the field and Jonathan Hammond punched in a one-yard touchdown with 5:40 to play in the first half.

At halftime, the Mustangs were within reach at 27-15, but in the third quarter the Wolverines took control of the contest for good.

Vandagriff ran in a six-yard touchdown, followed by back-to-back touchdown receptions by Zac Dyer for a 41-15 Prince Avenue lead late in third frame.

The Mustangs added a touchdown with 4:40 to play in the third period when Kytle connected to Skylar Early for a 35-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Wolverines still led 41-21.

Both squads traded touchdowns in the final quarter.

Vandagriff threw a 30-yard touchdown to Stiles with 11:43 to play followed by a Kytle eight-yard touchdown pass to Douglas.

Mount Vernon rushed for 116 yards on 35 attempts, led by the 70 yards of Skylar Early on 20 tries.

Kytle was 15-for-20 passing with 203 yards and two touchdowns.

Douglas led the Mustangs in receiving, hauling in 11 catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Landon Owens led the Wolverines in rushing with nine carries and 101 yards.

Vandagriff was 11-for-19 passing with 181 yards and three touchdowns.

Dyer Led the Wolverines in receiving with 111 yards on three receptions and two scores.

The Mustangs (0-1) return to action on Friday night, August 30, traveling to take on Mt. Pisgah.

Kickoff against the Patriots is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Patriot Athletic Campus in Johns Creek.
