Mustangs Fight Back to Take Down 3A Westminster in Five Innings, 11-3

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team picked up a major win on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 4, coming back from a three-run deficit to defeat the 3A Westminster Wildcats 11-3 in five innings at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

Sarah Schab picked up the game-winning single in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Bella Dishman to bring the run-rule into effect.

The Wildcats led early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.

Julia Rhee singled to score Jenna Brown followed by a passed ball to plate Rhee for a 2-0 advantage.

The Wildcats pushed the lead to 3-0 when Grace Carabillo singled to right field to bring in Quinn Schaffer.

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs.

Savanna Messner led off the inning with a home run to center field, followed by Kendall Slayden single to plate Jane Holliday.

Carson Watson followed with a double to score Schab and Slayden for a 4-3 lead.

The Mustangs blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating six runs for a 10-3 edge.

Bella Dishman doubled to score Gracie Hudgins, Holliday laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Messner, and Bella Dishman came in on a passed ball for a 7-3 lead.

Later in the inning, Schab scored on an infield error, Watson grounded out to bring in Slayden and Whitney Dishman scored on a passed ball for a 10-3 advantage.

Schab picked up the win in the circle tossing five innings while striking out five batters and allowing just one walk.

The Mustangs (6-6) return to the field Thursday, Sept. 5, hosting region rival Galloway.

First pitch against the Scots is slated for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
