ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team snapped a two-game slide on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 25, coming from two run down in the bottom of the seventh inning to take down the 5A Arabia Mountain Rams 8-7 at the Upper Campus Softball Field on Senior Night.

Tied at 7-7 with two outs and runners on the corners, senior Carson Watson smashed a single to right field to bring home the winning run.

The Rams jumped out to a six run lead in the top of the first inning.

Maiya Lewis hit a two-run home run, Raven McGhee singled to score two runs, and Ashley Brown doubled to score two more for the early advantage.

The Mustangs responded with four runs in the bottom of the first.

Savanna Messner scored on a wild pitch, Bella Dishman and Sarah Schab scored on an infield error, and Watson grounded out to plate to Whitney Dishman for a 6-4 contest.

Mount Vernon added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Kendall Slayden scored on an interference pay at home to pull within one run at 6-5.

After two scoreless innings, the Rams added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning.

Colby Richardson reached on a fly ball to center field that brought home Brown for a 7-5 Rams lead.

The Mustangs led off the bottom of the seventh with Ruby Burnett pinch hitting.

That proved successful as the freshman smashed a solo home run over the left field wall to pull within one run at 7-6.

Later in the inning, Kendall Slayden doubled to score Messner to tie the game at 7-7.

Two batters later, Watson came to plate and her heroics ensued.
