Mustangs Split Weekend Action Against Atlanta Girls School, Westminster

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity girls basketball team was in action twice over the weekend, taking on the Atlanta Girls School Hurricanes on Friday, Nov. 15 before playing the Westminster School Wildcats on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16.

On Friday, Mount Vernon came away with a 45-28 victory against Atlanta Girls School.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Hurricanes 12-5 in the second period for a 28-14 lead at halftime.

The Hurricanes cut the lead to eight, outscoring Mount Vernon 10-4 in the third quarter. But the Mustangs finished the final eight minutes on a 13-4 spurt to take the victory.

Katieanne Peterson posted 12 points including two made 3-pointers.

Teammate Emily Bloodworth also netted 12 points, scoring 11 in the first half.

Kate Bulger and Caroline Sellers each had 13 points for the Hurricanes.

On Saturday, Mount Vernon fell to 3A Westminster 60-30 on the road.

Frances Hunt led the Mustangs in scoring with 10 points.

Mount Vernon (2-2) returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 19, hosting Fellowship Christian.

Tip-off against the 1A Paladins is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
