ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity boys and girls basketball teams were in action multiple times over the Christmas break, earning multiple victories.
The varsity boys traveled to Panama City Beach (Fla.) to partake in the Beach Bash at Surfside Middle School.
The Mustangs came home with two victories, the first a 75-35 win against Ponce de Leon on Dec. 20 followed by a 76-10 win over Palm Bay Prep on Dec. 21.
After Christmas, the Mustangs picked up a 72-64 victory over Forest Park at the South Atlanta Invitational hosted by Clayton State University.
The Mustangs entered 2020 with momentum but have dropped the first two contests of the calendar year.
Mount Vernon fell to WD Mohammed 65-63 in overtime on Jan. 3 followed by a 78-63 loss at Riverwood on Jan. 4.
The varsity girls went 2-2 over the holiday break, picking up a win over Pinecrest 36-28 on Dec. 28.
In the second day of the Pinecrest Holiday Tournament, the Mustangs fell to St. Cecilia Academy 43-31 on Dec. 29.
The Mustangs are also 1-1 since the calendar flipped to 2020.
Mount Vernon defeated WD Mohammed on Friday, Jan. 3 at home 47-23 before falling on the road to Riverwood 51-25 on Saturday, Jan. 4.
Both squads are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 7, traveling to the Paidea School to take on the Pythons for another key Region 5-1A contest.
Tipoff for the varsity girls game is set for 7 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 8:30 p.m.
