ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity wrestling team is set to host their only home match of the 2019-20 season on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 8, welcoming Fellowship Christian and St. Francis to the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
Middle school will wrestle starting at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity team.
Along with honoring the senior wrestlers, Head Coach Ryan Welch says the team has a lot to compete for on Wednesday.
"If we can beat them (St. Francis), we will go into the Area Duals as the fourth seed," Welch said. "It will be fun watching our guys get some recognition for all their hard work in front of the home crowd."
As an added bonus, fans will also be energized by some calculated planning by the wrestling team members in advance of Wednesday's matches.
"It has been energizing watching the MV wrestling community come together to host our senior night," Welch said. "We hope it will be an exciting event with a few surprise guests making an appearance."
Of those surprise events for those attending, fans will get to witness two "Sumo Wrestling Events" featuring students Max Stevens vs. Bennett Williams followed by Head of Upper School Chip Houston vs. Varsity Head Boys Basketball Coach Tarrik Mabon.
Mount Vernon is also planning to have full concessions available at Wednesday's event.
