"Esports is the fastest growing high school sport in America and provides many students who may not have had the opportunity to participate as part of a team," Athletic Director Brad Dehem said. "Esports teams collaborate, practice critical thinking, and problem solve in a competitive environment."
Mount Vernon Head Coach Cooper van Rossum echoed those same sentiments.
"Esports is the fastest growing sport, not just in Georgia, but all over the world." he said. "That’s why the GHSA is proud to crown a Fall 2019 Georgia state champion in both League of Legends and Rocket League on Feb. 5 at The Mount Vernon School! This will be the first time the State Championships are held at a participating school."
The best high school teams in the state will battle it out live in both titles in the Black Box Theater. For those who can’t make the live event, both championships will be streamed with live commentators and announcers at twitch.tv/PlayVS.
Officially sanctioned by the GHSA, Esports is about to enter its fourth season in Georgia. Schools across the state compete in a single division pitting public, private, and charter students against each other in both a winter and spring season. Georgia currently offers three games for varsity competition: League of Legends, Rocket League, and SMITE.
"Mount Vernon is honored and proud to partner with playVS to host the 2020 GHSA State Championship in Esports for the winter season," Dehem said. "Our dynamic new upper school building will create an exciting atmosphere for the participants, their families, and all Esport fans."
