MACON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity wrestling team had a memorable run at the GHSA State Championships Feb. 13-15 at the Macon Centreplex.
Mount Vernon finished 12th out of 38 teams in 1A with only three scoring wrestlers (James Crandall, Erik Dodder & Jonathan Hammond).
Below is a recap of the event.
Senior James Crandall (170 lb .) was 2-2, advancing to only one match win away from placing. Both wins were pins. The two wrestlers who beat Crandall ended up as first place and fifth place. Crandall finished the season with a record of 18-11.
Junior Erik Dodder (182 lb.) was 2-1, placing second overall. He entered the tournament as the two seed. Dodder had two pins finished the season 28-4.
Senior Jonathan Hammond (220 lb.) was 3-2, placing fifth. Both wrestlers who beat Hammond were first and third placers. In the tournament, Jonathan faced an opponent from Mt. Zion, Logan Buchanan, who had beaten Jonathan at Sectionals, not once, but twice: once in the semis and once in the fifth place match. Reversing his previous loss at Sectionals, Jonathan beat him both times. Hammond finished the season 17-7.
