ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team picked up its first road and area win of the 2020 season, defeating the Galloway Scots 9-0 Tuesday afternoon, August 19, at the Warren Road Softball Complex.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Savanna Messner scored the fist of her three runs on an infield error, Frances Hunt grounded out to score Bella Dishman and Jane Holliday reached base on another Galloway error to bring home Ruby Burnett.
Mount Vernon added two more runs in the top of the second inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead when Grace Westmoreland and Savanna Messner each scored on Galloway errors.
The Mustangs made it a 6-0 contest in the top of the fourth inning when Reagan Hickey singled home Messner.
The final three runs for Mount Vernon came in the top of the seventh inning to push ahead 9-0.
Sarah Schab scored on an error by the Galloway outfield followed by a Westmoreland triple to score Ellie Stalzer and Holliday.
Schab (1-0) picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.
The righty tossed five scoreless innings, struck out eight batters, and allowed just three hits.
Westmoreland also tossed two innings of scoreless relief.
The Mustangs (2-0) are back in action on Thursday, August 20, hosting North Cobb Christian.
First pitch against the Eagles is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
