Mustangs Push Winning Streak to Five with 6-2 Victory at Pace Academy

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team pushed its winning and unbeaten streak to five games on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Pace Academy Knights 6-2 at the Riverview Athletic Complex.

The Mustangs waisted no time in taking the lead, scoring one run in the first inning when Reagan Hickey singled home Savanna Messner for a 1-0 lead.

Mount Vernon pushed its lead to four in the top of the second frame scoring three runs.

Messner doubled to score Jane Holliday, Bella Dishman singled to bring in Kendall Slayden and Messner came in on an infield error by the Knights.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the third inning, the Mustangs responded with a run in the top of the fourth when Lauren Dove reached on an error by the Knights that plated Frances Hunt for a 5-1 lead.

Pace added its final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a three run lead for the Mustangs at 5-2.

The final run of the contest came in the top of the seventh when Sarah Schab doubled home Ellie Stalzer to give Mount Vernon a 6-2 lead.

Schab (2-0) picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.

The senior tossed five innings, while allowing two runs and striking out three batters.

Grace Westmoreland earned the save as well, pitching two innings of scoreless relief while striking out four batters.

The Mustangs (5-0) return to the diamond on Thursday, Sept. 3, hosting Christian Heritage.

First pitch against the Lions is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
